Top 5 Tell-Tale Signs Of A Blocked Drain

Posted on

If not cleared at an early stage, a minor blocked drain can get worse and bring about disasters that are incredibly inconvenient and expensive to repair in the long run. Apart from producing an unpleasant smell, it can also damage your valued property and cause serious health problems.

Having been in the plumbing industry for more than 20 years, we at Servo-Rod find it very necessary to help you identify five tell-tale signs of a block drain and let you know what you can do to fix them.

1 - Odours
A blocked drain tends to give off very nasty odours; this is as a result of food particles and bacteria that get stuck in the pipes and start to break down as they decompose. To prevent this, ensure that you put all food waste and other foreign particles in the waste bin instead of washing them down the sink.

2 - Gurgling
If the drain makes loud or ominous gurgling noises when you flush the toilet or run the taps, chances are that you are having a blocked drain. The noises are often caused by trapped air which bubbles up and tries to push its way from the drain towards the surface when water flows down the drain.

3 - Slow
If you notice that water from the sinks, shower basins, and bath tubs are starting to drain slower than usual, it may be a bad sign of a blocked drain. This can be caused by a number of factors including system overuse, clogs, dumping of anti-bacterial soaps, or poor maintenance.

4 - Raised
A blocked drain can cause water levels to rise higher than normal in the toilet upon flushing. The water level may rise to a point of nearly overflowing or spilling over before finally draining away.

5 - Leakage
If there is water or liquid waste leaking from drain covers located at the front or back of your property, you can almost certainly blame it on drain blockage – a professional drain survey will be able to tell for sure.

In case you are experiencing one or all of the above drainage issues and have tried to fix them without much success, feel free to call us so that we can help you.
